In the evolving landscape of place marketing, understanding a location’s narrative is crucial. It’s not just about creating logos or catchy slogans; it’s about weaving a compelling story that resonates with both residents and visitors. At Colab, we’ve been at the forefront of this transformation, working closely with the Reading Economic Development Agency (REDA) to enhance Reading’s appeal through innovative place marketing campaigns.
Creating a Narrative for Reading
Most places lack a cohesive vision that defines their unique identity. This narrative is essential for distinguishing a place and making it memorable. A well-crafted story can turn stakeholders into passionate advocates, eager to promote their town or city in an authentic and meaningful way. This is where Colab steps in, helping to align local projects and initiatives with an overarching narrative that reflects Reading’s distinctive character.
Colab’s Place Marketing Projects
Over the past two years, Colab has collaborated with REDA on several key initiatives aimed at revitalising Reading. For Christmas 2022 and 2023, we launched place marketing campaigns that brought festive cheer to the community while boosting local engagement.

Additionally, we transformed unoccupied buildings into vibrant canvases, creating artwork that not only beautifies but also tells a story, turning potential eyesores into visual assets.

Working within the existing Reading brand, we developed several sub-brands under the iconic Reading ‘R’. These include the Walks Festival, the Food Festival, and a new logo for the summer marketing campaign. Each sub-brand retains a connection to the core identity of Reading while highlighting the diverse experiences the city offers.

Engaging Stakeholders
A successful place marketing strategy hinges on the engagement of stakeholders. In Reading, REDA have fostered a sense of ownership among local businesses, community groups, and educational institutions. By involving these stakeholders in the creation and promotion of Reading’s narrative, they ensure that the story is told with passion and authenticity.
In Reading, this approach has already begun to yield positive results. Our partnership with REDA and the active involvement of local stakeholders have set the stage for a vibrant and dynamic future.
